If you are asking for the cat from Smurfs name, the short answer is Azrael. Azrael is Gargamel’s cat on The Smurfs, the orange feline companion who follows the villain around, helps him scheme, and often ends up in trouble alongside him. This guide explains who Azrael is, how he fits into the world of the Smurfs, why his name is sometimes misspelled or confused, and how to tell him apart from other famous cartoon cats. It is written for viewers, parents, and trivia fans who want a clear answer without wading through unrelated results.
Azrael, the answer to the cat from Smurfs name question, is not a background pet who appears once and disappears. He is a recurring character in his own right, with a personality that viewers recognise: loyal to Gargamel, hungry for Smurfs, sarcastic in his own feline way, and frequently frustrated when plans fail. Because he appears in so many stories, his name has become a standard trivia question, alongside questions about Gargamel himself, the Smurf village, and the main Smurfs. Knowing the name Azrael is therefore the key that unlocks a whole set of related Smurfs questions.
Gargamel’s Cat’s Name on The Smurfs: Azrael
To be precise, the answer to the cat from Smurfs name question is Azrael, Gargamel’s cat on The Smurfs. Gargamel is the wizard and villain who lives in a gloomy hovel near the Smurf village and spends much of his time trying to capture Smurfs, whether for a potion, for revenge, or simply because he is obsessed with them. Azrael is his constant companion, the cat who stalks the forest, chases Smurfs through bushes, and reacts to Gargamel’s plans with a mixture of eagerness and exasperation. In many stories, Azrael is almost a second villain, because he has his own appetite and his own ideas, even though he cannot speak in the same way the human characters do.
The name Azrael is worth spelling carefully. It is sometimes written as Azreal, Azraelle, or with a different ending by fans who heard it rather than read it. The standard spelling used in Smurfs material is Azrael, and using that spelling will give you the most accurate search results. If you search with a misspelling, you may still find the right character, but you may also find unrelated pages, which is why a correct spelling matters for trivia and for finding episodes and character guides.
Azrael’s appearance is also distinctive. He is a large orange cat with a somewhat scruffy, grumpy look, which suits his life with Gargamel. He is not a cute, fluffy cartoon pet in the usual sense. He looks like a cat who has lived a hard life in a wizard’s hovel, and his expressions do much of the comedy. When Gargamel shouts, Azrael flinches. When a plan works briefly, Azrael looks pleased. When it fails, Azrael often suffers the consequences too, which makes him sympathetic even though he is on the villain’s side.
Who Is Azrael? The Cat From Smurfs Name Explained
Azrael’s role in The Smurfs can be understood in three parts: companion, hunter, and comic foil. As a companion, he is rarely far from Gargamel. He sleeps in the hovel, follows Gargamel into the forest, and waits while Gargamel mixes potions or sets traps. That closeness makes their relationship feel like a partnership, even though Gargamel is clearly in charge and often blames Azrael when things go wrong. As a hunter, Azrael is the physical threat to the Smurfs. He can run, pounce, and climb in ways Gargamel cannot, which makes him dangerous in forest chases. As a comic foil, Azrael undercuts Gargamel’s grand villain speeches with feline behaviour: getting distracted, falling over, or simply looking unimpressed.
That combination is why Azrael, the cat from Smurfs name searchers are looking for, works so well as a character. A villain who talks to himself can feel flat, but a villain who talks to a cat, argues with a cat, and gets ignored by a cat feels funnier and more human. Children enjoy Azrael because he is an animal character they can follow without dialogue. Adults enjoy him because his reactions often say what the audience is thinking. He is, in effect, the audience’s stand-in inside Gargamel’s hovel: the sensible creature watching a foolish plan unfold.
Azrael and Gargamel: A Villainous Partnership
The relationship between Gargamel and Azrael is affectionate in a rough, comic way. Gargamel depends on Azrael, and Azrael depends on Gargamel for food and shelter, even if both complain about the arrangement. Gargamel often talks to Azrael as if the cat understands every word, and Azrael often responds with a look that suggests he understands more than Gargamel realises. That dynamic has been a staple of the stories across different versions of The Smurfs, from the original comics and animated series to later adaptations, even when the visual style changes.
It is important to note that different adaptations may emphasise Azrael differently. In some stories he is more menacing, in others more comic. In some, he has a larger role in a particular episode, while in others he appears briefly. Those differences do not change his identity: he remains Gargamel’s cat, named Azrael, across the main versions of the franchise. If you are watching a specific episode and Azrael seems quieter or louder than you remember, that is usually a difference in that episode’s story, not a different cat.

Keeping this table in mind helps with quiz questions about the cat from Smurfs name that ask the same thing in different ways. A question might ask for Gargamel’s pet, for the name of the orange cat in The Smurfs, or for the cat who chases the Smurfs. All three point to the same answer: Azrael. If a quiz about the cat from Smurfs name gives you multiple choices, look for Azrael first, and be wary of names that sound similar but belong to other franchises.
Azrael Versus Other Famous Cartoon Cats
Part of why the cat from Smurfs name question is asked so often is that cartoon cats are easy to confuse, so pinning down the cat from Smurfs name as Azrael helps avoid mix-ups. Many animated series have a memorable cat, and viewers sometimes merge them in memory. Azrael is distinct because he belongs to a villain and lives outside the heroes’ village. That is different from a hero’s pet, a stray who joins the heroes, or a cat who is the main character of his own series. If the cat you are thinking of lives with a hero and helps the heroes, it is probably not Azrael. If the cat lives with a grumpy wizard and chases small blue characters through a forest, it is Azrael.
Another useful distinction is colour and setting. Azrael is orange and lives in a dark, cluttered hovel with Gargamel. The Smurfs themselves are small and blue and live in mushroom-shaped houses in a village hidden in the forest. That visual contrast — orange cat and gloomy wizard on one side, blue village on the other — is a quick way to orient yourself in a scene, even if you have not watched The Smurfs for years. The setting tells you whose side a character is on before anyone speaks.

Those guides cover different series and styles, but they share the same approach: identify the character clearly, explain their role, and help you find the right episode or story without confusion. A further animation-related guide, an Arcane TV show episode guide, shows how a single character moment can become a popular search in its own right, just as Azrael’s name has.
Why Do So Many People Search for the Cat From Smurfs Name?
There are a few reasons this search for the cat from Smurfs name stays popular. First, trivia and quiz games frequently include it, because it is a specific fact that is easy to ask and satisfying to answer. Second, parents watching The Smurfs with children are often asked questions they cannot answer on the spot, such as what the cat is called, and they search for a quick, reliable answer. Third, viewers returning to The Smurfs after a long gap remember Gargamel clearly but forget his cat’s name, because the cat does not speak in the same way and his name is said less often than Gargamel’s.
Streaming and clip viewing also play a role. A short clip may show Azrael chasing Smurfs without naming him, leaving a viewer to search for the name afterwards. A compilation video may show several villains and their pets in quick succession, making it hard to match each pet to its owner. In all of those cases, a short guide that states the name plainly, spells it correctly, and explains the character’s role is more helpful than a long plot summary that buries the answer.
How to Remember the Name Azrael
A simple memory link for the cat from Smurfs name helps: Gargamel and Azrael are a pair, and both names are unusual enough to stick together once you hear them as a pair. Say them together a few times — Gargamel and Azrael — and the pairing becomes a unit in memory. Another link is the letter A: Azrael is the answer to a question about an animal companion, and he is an orange cat who is always around. Neither trick is perfect, but pairing the villain’s name with the cat’s name is far more effective than trying to memorise Azrael in isolation.
If you are helping a child remember the cat from Smurfs name, point out Azrael in the next episode you watch together and name him out loud when he appears. Children remember character names quickly when the name is linked to a visible action, such as Azrael pouncing, hiding, or reacting to Gargamel. That active watching turns a trivia fact into a shared joke, which is how many Smurfs names are passed from one generation of viewers to the next.
